Cignal Satellite TV Is Here! Now With HDTV
In an earlier entry I mentioned that Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) subsidiary MediaQuest Holdings purchased a stake in a Philippine company called GV Broadcasting licensed to supply direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV service and that it has commenced tests late last year for its commercial launch some time in 2009.
Well, PLDT has yet to formally introduce its much-awaited DTH service that is all set to rival pioneer and current market leader Dream Satellite TV but the phone giant’s new baby is now available in certain areas of the Philippines – and its name is Cignal Digital TV:

By bringing new technologies and compelling content right into their homes, we aim to enrich the way this market consumes information and entertainment, wherever they are in the Philippines,” said Benjie Fernandez, MediaScape managing director.”
Go right ahead if you want to enjoy a chuckle or two at his words but let’s now take a look at what Cignal has to offer.
Cignal Digital TV operates on the Ku-band from the NSS 11 satellite orbiting at 108.2° E, and uses the NDS VideoGuard encryption system. So far, the following channels are available to would-be Cignal subscribers:

Aside from these channels, the World Fashion Channel is also available free-to-air (FTA) from the same northeast Asia beam on NSS 11 that the Cignal Digital TV bouquet is transmitting on, in addition to a trio of Korean adult channels that, while encrypted, do transmit in the clear from time to time.
Ordinarily, it costs PHP 5,500.00 to subscribe to Cignal Digital TV, which buys you the Cignal set-top box, a 70 cm. Ku-band satellite dish and LNB, a remote control, and the cables to connect everything together. Installation is also thrown in for free. At the moment, the monthly subscription cost to the above-mentioned Cignal Digital TV package is PHP 390 a month. Postpaid and prepaid subscription plans are available.
Cignal, however, is conducting a promotion from today until May 31, 2008: according to this thread from the Filsat satellite hobbyist site and confirmed from Cignal’s customer care center itself, a postpaid subscriber can buy a complete set-top box set for only PHP 3,890.00 with one months’ subscription free, while a prepaid subscriber can buy the same for only PHP 7,400.00 with ten months’ subscription free. Installation charges are extra.
As an additional incentive, Cignal Digital TV may – may, I said – carry the live broadcast of the much awaited Manny Pacquiao – Larry Hatton fight on May 2 free-of-charge to its subscribers. Watch this space for more details.
It is fair to note, however, that Dream Satellite TV also has an ongoing promotion where you only need to pay PHP 8,900.00 that buys you 10 months’ subscription to Dream’s highest subscription plan tier. Dream throws in its set-top box set for free, but installation charges are also extra.
Technobiography says that Cignal will commence broadcasting high-definition TV (HDTV) channels in June, probably to coincide with the service’s grand launch. The same Filsat site I referred to earlier, however, says that the set-top boxes now sold by Cignal may not be able to decode the MPEG-4 signals of HDTV, a fact confirmed by Cignal’s customer care center itself. If you want to receive HDTV on your big, flat-screen LCD or plasma TV, it may be better to wait for Cignal to sell a HDTV-compatible set-top box.

I would like to know if the Cignal set-top box can also receive free-to-air signals from both Ku- and C-band frequencies and thus add channels thereby, and if I can add additional satellite dishes with the aid of a DiSEqC switch?

I just called up Cignal’s customer care center and found out that their HDTV service isn’t very cheap. It’s PHP 790 a month for just an additional two – yes, two – HD channels over and above the basic PHP 390 package I quoted above.

The two HDTV channels that Cignal is carrying are History Channel HD and Voom HD, and Cignal has a subscription option where you can just watch these two channels for PHP 450 a month. Are these two channels worth the extra bucks?

Channel line up is very limited.. most of them are free to air, what about other channels? ESPN, START SPORT? these had been dropped from Dream. If you guy are serious to compete with dream then come up with a better channel line up otherwise it won’t be worth the hassle to change from Dream to you.

I have asked a couple of your present dealers – in Cavite and Cabanatuan , one says P7400 , the other says P7900 for a prepaid 10 months service plus the equipments , I do the install myself , warranty void- no problem . In this regard , It looks like you are following Dream’s footsteps of non standard pricing. Also how do you sustain your dealers after the equipment is installed ?

Im subscribing now to Cignal,Cavite area ako and ok naman yung reception nila although at times may audio loss pero very quick lang naman which is understandable kasi nga DTV eh (Digital TV), kumbaga, konting signal distraction lang apektado na sya,pero overall, ok naman.
If I were you,kung me available na Cable TV provider sa area nyo, dun na kayo,mas maraming channel at mas stable pati. Post paid ang nakuha ko,locked-in for 2 yrs at Php 390 a month.
Yung cost, Php 3890 sya pero pag HD 7k plus na, eh 2 or 3 channels lang ang difference (history,NBA Finals at Disney something). You’ll add Php 500 sa installation. Kaya siguro may Php 7400 at 7900 sa napagtanungan ni NoelM. I’m the first customer of CignalHD here in Olongapo City and I am very satisfied with the service. Viewed in side-by-side windows in my 50″ SXRD, the Cignal picture is markedly superior to my other provider. And of course the HD picture is pristine! Broadcast in 1080i, HistoryHD and VOOMHD are a delight and I now find myself glued to my TV. Now if only they can increase the channel lineup to include Star Sports, Discovey and BBC…

Hello, I am former dealer and installer of this RAON (no monthly fees)based DMbox and HY888plus tv receiver/satellite dish receiver set up here in the far north and highland areas.It was a big upset on my part because most of the local and some Intl. channels were gone,I owe my customers some good explanations & i was hoping CIGNAL tv will be the front line in solving this problem as compared to the high cost of fees from DREAM TV. We have Dream Satellite in Iloilo, and honestly the channels suck, no ETC, Arirang, Myx, Food Network, and Channel V. If Cignal TV could provide such channels, I will trash my dream without a second thought. Please advertise more on TV, I saw the AD for a second and didn’t get the company name. Sorry but Im VERY VERY disappointed. Its almost two weeks now and ihavent received any feedback from them. Made some daily followups but they kept on saying out of stock.
We do not have signal for 1 week now, and no customer support from Cignal! we are in cavite area!
I hope Cignal could offer to potential customers more options in choosing what channels they would like to view. I for one do’nt like quantity in channel offerings but more in quality.This is especially true to others who are busy and do not have much time for watching television.

The channels included in the package are not that interesting. It’s not worth. Subscribing to channels that you are not interested watching in is not is worthless. There are plenty of channels worth watching with but not included in this package.

Cignal is good because it’s powered by SMART and PLDT. But unfortunately, I was disappointed with my application kasi nung mag-install na sila eh di daw pwede dahil may nakaharang na dalawang puno. Ang signal ba di pwede maka-penetrate sa mga puno at dahon? Kung bakod siguro ng kapitbhay namin tatanggapin ko po ang reason. Kaya yun, may cble na sana kami pero di nila na-install. Balik Baron Antenna na naman. If CIGNAL has a powerful and hi-tech equipments kahit gaano kadaming puno kaya mag-penetrate ang signal.
It’s not Cignal’s fault, but in the nature of the signal coming from the satellite orbiting some 35,786 km. away from Earth. It’s very weak and needs a very clear line of sight to the receiving satellite dish.
Why don’t you try Dream satellite TV?

hey to the people of mediascape…. warning the owner/ customer who’s receiver are defective w/ in warranty period are going to complain to dti. y daw its almost a 2 months they dont receive the replacement box… whats up!
I thought Dream Satellite’s customer service was bad, but Cignal’s got it WORST. You couldn’t even call it customer service if there is NO service at all. I tried calling all their numbers, I was on the phone for more than 45 minutes, it just kept on ringing… I had to wait for almost an hour just to get connected. Our client in the province was restless na, these companies don’t know how to take care of their end-users and dealers. Nakaka-frustrate. When clients call the company’s hotline or service centers, tapos nobody’s answering the phone, it kind of gives the impression that the Company is into scamming people (especially, if activation pa lang). I was just about to conclude that because the Company already earned money from sale of the unit. We were just testing out the market for Cignal Satellite in our province at the moment, however, we are disappointed so… we might not be distributing it anymore.

Hello Glenn if this is your first time to install a satellite dish and don’t intend to go into satellite TV viewing as a hobby I would strongly recommend using the services of your Cignal dealer and have him set it up.
If you want to do it yourself, there are many sites online that will help you install your dish – I recommend http://www.filsat.com as a helpful resource.
For pointing your dish in the right direction http://www.dishpointer.com is a very useful site too as it uses Google Maps to help you find your exact location.

Take it from me when I say that Cignal won’t be adding any more SD channels to its present lineup.
Cignal, however, intends to add more HD channels soon, as it wants to be the predominant supplier HDTV entertainment in the Philippines.

last May i went for vacation in phil. and 1 person introduce this cignal satellite that if you will get one u will avail a promo of 3 mos free which is very very wrong …. we avail only less than 2 mos and the difficult one you cannot contact the people who is assign there in province of antique which is manage br certain name BOY C. almost all of the people are complaining contacting this man. my sister consume 500PHP load just to contact him and only he will reply just wait and it will be coming this afternoon refering with the network that it will work… my God for the higher people managing this cignal network , dont let this guy BOY C to ruin your bussiness …. you can send some of your staff in province of ANINI-Y, Antique and ask the people,regarding the service of you comp.
