The Unlawyer At One

First of all, I’d like to thank everybody who has taken the time to drop by this site in the year its been up, to read its contents of this site and comment, and to link back. Here are some observations about my blogging efforts, exactly one year after I first posted an entry on this site:

  • I originally set out to post two entries a day, and I tell you it’s not an easy thing to sustain. Nonetheless, I’ve managed to post 576 entries on this site and received 301 comments in return. I wish though that I had more commenters onboard.
  • It’s true what everybody says: search engines are a blogger’s friend, as a lot of my site’s traffic is made up of search engine referrals. The bulk of the queries come from Google, but Yahoo! comes at a close second.

  • In a recent interview with Ajay, I said that blogging is:

“… a handy way of keeping track of the interesting things I read online, as well as keep me better acquainted with the issues that affect my industry.

“In many ways, blogging is like a extension of a technique I mastered in law school, where I discovered the best way to study legal concepts is to take copious notes and divide the text into comprehensible clauses.”

    This is still correct.

  • I post a lot of material about Philippine business, and about my industry – photography and retailing – in particular. Since I’m often called to speak in public about Philippine retailing, commenting is a breeze because of all the online notes I’ve made.
  • I’m definitely a linker, not a writer.
  • I’ve gone through three WordPress themes: Clemens Orth’s Relaxation 3 Column, Matthew Phiong’s TriColumn, and Tim Yang’s Problogger Clean. As you can see, I’m partial to three-column designs.
  • WordPress utility plugins I use? There’s Spam Karma 2 – a must-install if you don’t want to be bothered by comment and trackback spam. Another utility I use is Google Sitemaps. Read this article from SearchEngineWatch why it’s a good idea to install it.
  • WP-Shortstat is a handy utility to keep track of visitor stats, except for one flaw: it eats up a lot of database space, especially if your spammers hit your site a lot. The solution? Yuga suggests to empty the WP-Shortstat database at least once a week.
  • For all my moblogging picture uploads, I use Photopress Plugin. Videos are managed by VideoPop.
  • As for The Unlawyer’s Photoblog, I replaced its original Pixelpost content management system because it couldn’t handle comment spam all too well, even with the addition of Akismet. So I replaced it with Markku Seguerra’s iPAP.
